The two islands which are collectively known as Koh Racha (Yai and Noi) can be found just 12 kms south of Phuket and are renowned for their diving and snorkelling opportunities. The crystal waters are teeming with sea life and because of the natural beauty both on and off shore; they have become very popular with day trips. However, only Racha Yai is developed. It is here where you will find restaurants, bungalows, resorts, bars and shops. Racha Noi is home to purely natural attractions.
Racha Yai
Racha Yai is developing at a rapid speed. In just a few years, it boasts a tourist infrastructure which rivals other small islands and is improving every year. Its stunning white sandy beach leaves a deep impression on everyone who visits it. The U-shaped bay, Ao Tawan, is home to a number of small rocky outlets where the snorkelling is sensational and the water as clear as that which comes out of a tap. However, this is also the busiest bay. If you are looking for something quieter and more intimate, the smaller bay, Ao Siam, is beautiful and the perfect place to take a quiet stroll along the golden sand.
There are a number of bungalows for rent here and it has just seen the first luxury resort open. Dining options consist of a few restaurants serving Thai and international cuisine as well as fresh sea food. When it comes to bars, most can be found along the main coastal road and on the beach itself. Like everything else on Racha Yai, they are laid back and very welcoming of visitors. It is important to note that there are no ATMs or banking facilities on the island so make sure you have plenty of cash on you. Electricity only runs in the evenings in most bungalow operations.
Racha Noi
Racha Noi is uninhabited and deserted. It is a natural wonder in itself boasting a forested inland and some of the best diving and snorkelling spots in the Andaman Sea. It is possible to hire a long tail boat from Racha Yai and spend the day here. Remember to bring your own food and water and be sure to take all of your rubbish with you.
What to do
Diving and snorkelling
Activities on Koh Racha are largely limited to the water with snorkelling and diving being the top two. It is essential that you are an experienced diver as there are no diving schools here. If you can’t dive, snorkelling is just as exciting and will allow you a glimpse into the underwater world.
Hiking
There are many nature trails on both islands, taking you through lush forests and along quiet beach roads.
Relax on the beach
Both islands boast stunning beaches which are largely untouched. While neither island has the abundance of beach facilities that are found on Phuket, there is enough. It is precisely this undeveloped nature of Koh Racha that attracts so many people.
How to get there
Long-tail and speedboat transfers can easily be organised from Chalong Pier on Phuket. The journey time is about 45 minutes.
