These two islands, known collectively as Naka Islands, are very small islands in southern Thailand. They are located very close to Phang Nga Bay and are popular destinations on many day trip itineraries. Naka Yai is the larger of the two and is home to a small fishing village. It has however recently seen a lot of investment and three large resorts are currently being built; the only development this island has seen since the village was built decades ago. The sleepy fishing village is about to get a very loud wake up call and once the resorts have been built, the island will be transformed into an exclusive getaway for those looking to avoid the usual tourist hubs.
Naka Yai
The beaches on Naka Yai are long, wide and made up of golden sand. The busiest beach is found on the east side of the island, and along with deckchairs, umbrellas, food stalls and toilets, it also boasts stunning views out to Phang Nga Bay. This is the beach where most day trippers visit. Due to the lack of development, there is not much to do on Naka Yai with swimming and sunbathing being the main activities. It is recommended that you bring your own food and refreshments if you plan on staying all day as food options are very limited.
Naka Noi
Naka Noi is the smaller of the two islands and is known locally as ‘Pearl Island’. This is due to the fact that it is the site where rare South Sea pearls are refined. Day trips regularly make the trip to Naka Noi and almost always include a tour of the pearl farm. With the exception of the pearl farm, there is very little development here and no immediate plans to start building. It is a good place to visit while on a tour of the area but there is no accommodation and very little other amenities.
Getting to the Naka Islands
It is possible to hire a long-tail boat and driver from Ao Po Pier on Phuket who will be happy to take you around the Naka Islands for a price. If you opt for this way, be sure to take your own food and refreshments. It is also possible to join a day tour which visits these islands as well as many more in the area. You will not have as long to spend here however as there is much to cram in. You schedule will be very tight and inflexible, unlike if you were to hire your own boat and make your own way there.
