Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are two sister islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay, halfway between Phuket and Krabi. They are being developed at quite an astounding rate, especially Koh Yao Noi, but they still remain a peaceful alternative to the crowded beaches of Patong and Karon.
Koh Yai Noi is home to some world-famous home-stay programmes which have won international acclaim. They have ensured that the popularity of the two islands continues to improve and that the local residents are all involved in the development. Both islands are bathed in untamed natural beauty and offer visitors the chance to relax in beautiful surroundings while catching a glimpse into local island life in Thailand.
Despite seeing much development in recent years, neither island has banking facilities so it is important to get money out before you arrive. Internet cafés are available here as are restaurants, guest houses, beach bars and even a 7-Eleven convenience store. There are many guesthouses opening up throughout the islands as well as a luxury resort being built on Yao Noi. Yao Yai already boasts exclusive resorts and beachside bungalows.
What to do
Koh Yao Noi does not have much in the way of sightseeing opportunities although simply exploring the quaint villages and local markets is fascinating. The actual heart of the island and the way of life for the locals has changed very little in 20 years; it is the beach areas which have seen the most commercial development.
Wooden stilted houses can be found along the roads inland and buffalos grazing in the long grass can be seen round every corner. There are a number of rubber plantations and mangrove swamps which add to the beauty and simplicity of this island. The locals are incredibly laid back and love to practice their English on unsuspecting tourists. Hiring a bike and driving through the villages will ensure that you meet plenty of locals keen for a chat. Hiking through the inner part of the island is also very popular and there are many trekking routes for keen hikers.
The beaches are mainly found on the east coast, and it is here where the hub of activity really lies. There are restaurants along the beach road as well as bars, shops and Thai food stalls. Popular beach activities include snorkelling, swimming, volleyball and of course sitting back and soaking up the sun.
How to get there
Long-tail boats make daily trips here from Bang Rong Pier on the east coast of Phuket. Fares are usually very reasonable, approximately 50 baht per person one-way. These boats are more like taxis, departing at set times throughout the day. Boats leave the pier at 09:30, 12:00 and 17:00 every day. They stop at Koh Yao Yai first before making the eight minute journey to Koh Yao Noi. It is also possible to privately hire a long-tail boat from Ao Po pier; although this will be more expensive.
Once you are on Koh Yao, motorbikes can be rented on a daily basis, as can bicycles while tuk tuks are available for short trips.
