This is a stunning island, just 20 minutes by boat from Surakul pier on Phuket. It is an undeveloped haven housing local fishermen and a must visit for anyone looking to escape the madness of Phuket for a day or two.
Life on this island is uncomplicated and very peaceful. There are just 1500 people living on the entire island; all of whom are descendants of the first settlers on the island over 200 years ago. The village is a traditional fishing village, although unlike most places in Thailand, it is completely Muslim. For this reason, you should always make sure that you dress respectfully when away from the beach.
There are many things to see within the village itself, as well as just watching the locals get on with daily life. Restaurants abound and guest houses can be found on every corner. The village also has a school, a mosque and many souvenir shops. The locals are very friendly and will go out of their way to ensure that you feel welcome.
The beach, of course, is the biggest draw to the island. It is very quiet with minimal facilities; however there are a few restaurants lining the beach road, accommodation options and food stalls. The sand is golden and extremely soft while the water is clear, calm and warm.
How to get there
It is possible to rent a long-tail boat from Surakul pier which can take you to the island. If you are just planning on staying for one day, the long-tail will wait and take you back to Phuket. If you are planning on staying overnight, your guesthouse will be able to arrange transport back to Phuket. There are also many day tours available which will organise transfers from your hotel in Phuket to the pier, boats across to the island and transfers back to your hotel in the evening.
