Kata's beach front is one mile of unspoilt golden sand and not nearly as developed as neighbouring Karon or Patong. People often travel to this beach regardless of where they are staying on Phuket as it is renowned for its pure beauty. However, while the beach may get busy, it never feels crowded.
The top end of the beach is home to a number of large trees which provide shaded areas. This part of the beach is particularly popular with families. Hammocks can be found in abundance here and Thai masseurs offer the ultimate in relaxation therapy. There are many local amenities found close by so you will not be stuck for dining or entertainment options. The southern end of the beach is where you should head if you are intent on catching some sun. It is the busiest part of the beach and also the liveliest. There are water sports opportunities, beach volleyball games, restaurants, bars and many beachfront hotels.
Water sports
Water sports are great fun for the whole family and Kata is home to countless companies hiring out jet skis, banana boats, kayaks and much more. If you are feeling particularly daring, parasailing is available offering stunning views across the ocean. Windsurfers and Hobie Cats can be rented to those who prefer to stay closer to the ground but still want to explore, and waterskiing is on offer and great fun for all who try.
Diving is a popular past time and many people arrive on Phuket to take advantage of the stunning dive sites which abound. If you are travelling with young children however, diving might not be so practical. Snorkelling is a great activity for the entire family and some of the best snorkelling in Phuket is found at your fingertips. The rocky outlets found at the northern and southern end of the beach are home to a wealth of marine life including wrasse, Parrotfish and rays. High tide is the best time to snorkel and if you don’t have your own fins and mask, these can be rented from outlets all across the beach.
When it comes to surfing, the southern end of the beach is the place to head. The waves here are fast, yet still manageable and are ideal for novices as well as experienced surfers. If you don’t have a surfboard but fancy having a go, boards can be rented by the hour from many beachside rental shops. Surfing tuition is also available. The waves are far less powerful close to the shore and are perfect for children.
Sunbeds are available the entire length of the beach if you are not fortunate enough to stay in a beachside hotel and quality restaurants line the beach road. Public toilets are found regularly and beachwear and accessories can be bought from the street side stalls.
Hawkers
Hawkers traipse up and down the beach continuously trying to sell their wares. But, while much of what they sell are mass produced souvenirs, some hawkers sell freshly cut fruit, ice cream and refreshments; perfect for a mid morning snack. Unless you actually want to buy something from a hawker, it is adviseable to ignore them and not make eye contact. The food vendors found throughout the beach will not hassle you and make it possible for you to enjoy a spot of lunch without leaving your sunbed. Sandwiches and pizzas are firm favourites with tourists, although the vendors also sell simple Thai dishes and BBQ meat.
As the sun sets over the beach, the sunbathers make their way inside and the sport enthusiasts come out to play. Beach volleyball is played every evening and is free for anyone to join in or watch. The largest game is enjoyed on the southern end of the beach and starts at about 16:30. People also come out to jog along the beach before they head out for the evening and for those not so active, sipping a cocktail and watching the sun set over the ocean is a great way to end a day.
Accommodation
Accommodation options are plentiful with everything from cheap guest houses to luxury resorts and spas. There are also many mid-range establishments which are ideal for families. Accommodation is obviously more expensive on the beach, but booking in advance will ensure that you get excellent value for money.
Dining Out
Dining out on Kata Beach opens up a wealth of opportunity. Sea side restaurants serving up fresh sea food open their doors every night while traditional Thai establishments can be found along the beach road. Western food can be found in restaurants here, although there are not nearly as many as in nearby Patong. Other evening venues include cocktail bars, pubs, beachside bars and local establishments. Again, there is not a great a selection as found on Patong, but there are plenty for those looking for a calmer atmosphere. Kata offers the ultimate intimate experience and is also one of the most family friendly beaches on Phuket.
