Known locally as Koh Hae, Coral Island is a stunning location just nine kilometres away from Phuket. There are two main beaches which are popular with visitors and where most amenities are found: Long Beach and Banana Beach. Here you will find golden sand, clear waters, beach bars and restaurants and of course coral reefs; what the island is actually famous for.
The snorkelling opportunities off the coast of both beaches are simply breathtaking and the nearest reef is just a short swim out to sea. The reef is home to schools to fish and is within easy reach for everyone, even if you’re not a strong swimmer. It boasts clown fish, parrot fish, damsel fish, surgeon fish and even the odd stingray. The waters are so clear that even by staying on the surface and snorkeling, you will be able to enjoy all of the underwater scenes up for offer.
Most people arrive on Coral beach for the day to enjoy the sights on offer. It takes minutes by speedboat from Phuket and it is also possible to hire a long tail boat to make the journey there in traditional Thai style.
Once you have arrived on Long beach, you will be able to take advantage of the deserted beach, abundance of sea life and to see the small sea gypsy community who call the island and the waters around the island home. There is no equipment for hire on Coral Island so if you want to go snorkelling and you are not on a guided tour, you will have to bring some with you.
There is a small trail from Long beach to Banana Beach which leads through the jungle and is a fun walk for people of all ages – even children. It takes about 15 minutes to complete and is well worth it.
A day’s tour will give you all day on the beach and with such a short journey between the island and Phuket, your day will not be cut short by travel. It is a popular day trip and while there are many people who often travel there in one day, it does not take away from the scenery or serenity of the beautiful beaches.
There is only one place to stay on the island; Coral Island Resort, which offers a number of classes including a one day scuba diving course. The resort houses 44 bungalows, many of which are located on the beach.
